Mama Deb [userpic]

Okay, still not feeling 100%, but my wonderful husband brought home all I'll need to make Shabbos last night - and it's not that much effort to put some chicken in the oven and make rice. So I don't have to worry or panic or anything anymore. If we were into more elaborate meals, well, he'd have brought home the extras as take-out.

So that's set.

question

Mama, is the Ark set so that the congregation faces due east or toward Jerusalem. Do you know?

By preference, the Ark (the cabinent holding the Torah scrolls, for those who don't know) is set facing Jerusalem, which in the US means East, and the congregation faces, more or less, the Ark.

However, it's not always possible to do that. The architecture and geometry of the synagogue, which may have been converted from some other building or may have to work with the size/shape of the land it's on, may dictate another arrangement. In my own synagougue, for example, the Ark is on the southern wall. In fact, while some of the seats on the women side actually do face east, when we stand to pray, we turn in the direction of the Ark.
