It's funny how familiar this sounds

In a Slate article, a historian discusses the letters and journals written by the women of the 19th C.

For most women, letter-writing was a form of publication, albeit for a specialized readership. After all, few dared to consider polishing pieces for the press (or would have had the time, given lives filled with domestic cares).

Fascinating article!

There's a lot to be said for public diaries like this. I, for one, would love to be "discovered" though it, but there's a lot to be said for secret diaries, too. That's where you can REALLY let go. I imagine I'll destroy much of what's in my handwritten journals when I get old, just to keep them forever secret.
