I feel so decadent

I decided to pick up some cold cuts while I was out getting what will be my weekly slice of pizza (20 carbs, you see. I'm permitted 30 for lunch, but pizza just doesn't come standard, so I'm erring on the side of caution) plus a salad.

Funny how I feel much better now than I did at this same point yesterday...

Anyway, while I gave my orders to the deli men, I noticed they had the very end of a piece of pickled tongue.

I love pickled tongue. So, I asked for it just as is, figuring it wasn't worth slicing but would nice in chunks.

They sliced it oh, so thin. And then I saw how expensive it was. I'm glad I got it, but now I feel extravagant and decadent.

It's a nice feeling.


Paper-thin sliced pickled tongue is one of my childhood delights. Of course it's not to be found here in Colorado, but on the rare occasions I have it back east it reminds me of the lunches of cold cuts my grandparents would serve in their apartment a few blocks from the Empire State Building, when the family went up to visit them.

I can never quite imagine that pickled tongue tastes good, but then the only way I've tried it was in blood sausage with pickled tongue pieces, and I found that kind of sausage gross in general, at least the variants that are eaten cold.

Hey, you have to treat yourself every once and a while. Life is kicking you around so much everyday anyway.

I told Mom about the tongue appetizer, which sounded good to her. She then bemoaned the inability to buy the back-of-the-tongue any more, which while too tough to eat, is good to put into soups, e.g. split pea.
