So not my day

For a while, I was smelling something odd and burny, but figured it was the heater.

Nope. Not at all.

My CPU (which is kept in a cubby in my desk) started spewing *smoke*. Now, the computer was working fine at that point, but, well. When that happens, you shut down fast and call your computer guy, which I did.

The cpu has been unplugged and is sitting on my desk. I could not, even with help, open the case and I can't get the cable connection out.

And it smells most unpleasant in here.

You might well be able to salvage the burner (and maybe the RAM, the hard drive, or other components). See if you can get someone competent to dissect the corpse, and if you can identify the specific harm, try to keep the other pieces for the office. (Especially if the other machines are identical, or nearly so; then you can either augment one or more of their RAM, or at least see about placing the burner into a different machine, on the theory that if it was necessary before, it still is now.)

Still, stuff like this is a pain until it's fixed. Good luck.
