In other news:

I just signed up with Zipcar. At the very least, it means I don't need to rent a car on Friday if I need to go some place on Sunday.

Or I just spent some money on a service I'll never use. We'll find out.

Zipcar is such a great idea. I see they have a lot of locations throughout the 5 boroughs. We have them here in L.A. but only in a very few areas.

I think that's the difference in the cultures - generally speaking, you don't NEED a car in NYC, not really. I haven't owned one since 2000. In other cities, I don't think it's possible to function without one.

Zipcar is fabulous. I have a few here in Brooklyn. I really love the service. Great for getting groceries. I think it's so Green and fun. Never worry about parking again. :)

I keep thinking how convenient it would be to have a car for an hour or two just for holiday shopping. (Although getting a car service might be less money.)

But I'm also thinking about getting a car for emergencies.

Several of my friend's use it in Canada. They love it -- use it a couple of times and it's still less than renting, here at least.

It depends on a lot of factors. Example - we'll be going to my inlaws for a few days at the end of the summer, and taking them back with us. I'll need to rent a car for about a week, and it will need to be at least midsized if not larger so it can hold four largish people plus our luggage and everything they need to bring back for the winter. Going to our normal rental place will be a better deal.

On the other hand, if I want to take a day trip to New Jersey on a Sunday, this would be a lot easier.
